From 3D Printing to Crystal Markets: Shanghai and Donghai, China – March 2026

In mid-March 2026, geologist and Crystal World founder Tom Kapitany arrived in China alongside Crystal World Manager Rick Gosper. This multi-city trip allowed them to divide their focus between evaluating cutting-edge industrial technology in Shanghai and conducting hands-on gemstone sourcing within the massive mineral markets of Donghai.

Shanghai: Green Architecture and Industrial 3D Printing

The first leg of the journey began in Shanghai. Despite the rainy weather, the city’s rapid transformation was on full display, particularly China’s massive national effort toward greening its urban centres with vertical gardens and sustainable infrastructure.

While taking in iconic sights like the historic Fairmont Peace Hotel and the Bund, the primary objective in Shanghai was commercial research. Tom and Rick spent their time at a major 3D Printing Expo, working alongside their interpreter, Isabelle (Teresa). The goal of the intensive expo visit was to navigate a steep learning curve: assessing industrial 3D printing capabilities and determining how they can commercialise, adapt, and integrate these manufacturing processes to meet their specific business needs back home.

The 320 km/h Transit to the Crystal Capital

Moving from technological research to physical material sourcing, Tom and Rick caught a business-class bullet train from Shanghai to Donghai.

The five-hour journey north highlighted the efficiency of China’s high-speed rail network, with the train consistently cruising at 320 km/h. Sitting at the very front of the train, Tom noted a classic physics riddle during transit: for a brief window, he was personally moving at 322 km/h—exactly 2 km/h faster than the train itself.

Sourcing and Spotting Fakes in Donghai

Donghai is globally renowned as a massive manufacturing and trading hub for natural quartz and crystal products. It represents just one of four distinct market towns across China specializing in mineral manufacturing that Tom aims to visit annually.

Navigating the bustling street markets of Donghai requires a sharp eye and years of industry experience. While Tom can haggle fluently in Mandarin, the scale of the operation requires employing both an interpreter and a local agent to coordinate logistics, shipping, and container exports.

The sourcing process is a demanding, high-stakes grind:

  • Quality Control: The markets are filled with incredible buys, but they are equally flooded with sophisticated fakes, treated materials, and reconstructed stones. Spotting these requires rigorous on-the-ground inspection.

  • Buying for Four Businesses: Because Tom is sourcing inventory simultaneously for four separate businesses, the volume and variety of material selected is massive.

  • The Element of Surprise: While the buying trip was highly successful, Tom intentionally keeps his specific purchases under wraps on social media, preferring to surprise his customers when the shipping containers finally arrive and the stock is unveiled.

This productive trip across China highlighted the ongoing evolution of our inventory sourcing and industrial capabilities. By combining cutting-edge manufacturing insights from Shanghai with rigorous, expert quality filtering directly on the streets of Donghai, we ensure that only the highest quality, fully verified items make it back to our shelves.
