Crystal World Welcomes the Cranbourne Meteorite!

Following his recent appearance in the ABC documentary Stuff the British Stole, Crystal World owner and international geologist Tom brought several rare fragments of the famous Cranbourne Meteorite—also known by its Bunurong name Kuunhdurt Laang or the Fire Star Rock—out of his private collection for public display at Crystal World.

The fragments, acquired through an exchange with Museums Victoria, have until now remained in Tom’s personal collection. Inspired by renewed public interest following the documentary, he gives visitors to Crystal World the opportunity to see a genuine piece of one of Australia’s most significant meteorites.

Tom’s fascination with the Cranbourne Meteorite began when he moved to Devon Meadows in 1989 and discovered he was living near one of Australia’s most important meteorite strewn fields. Thirteen meteorite masses have been recovered across Melbourne’s south-east, with the largest—known as the Bruce or Cranbourne No. 1 meteorite—weighing around 3.55 tonnes. Although it was discovered near what is now Devon Meadows, the massive iron meteorite was sent to London in the 1860s and is now housed at the Natural History Museum.

As highlighted in Stuff the British Stole, the meteorite has become part of an ongoing conversation about the return of culturally and historically significant objects. Tom believes its deep connection to the Bunurong people, who knew the meteorite as Kuunhdurt Laang (“Fire Star Rock”), adds an important cultural dimension to discussions about its future.

While any historic meteorite must be carefully preserved to prevent deterioration, Tom hopes that by displaying fragments of the Cranbourne Meteorite at Crystal World, visitors can experience a remarkable piece of Victoria’s geological and cultural heritage firsthand.
