Roughing It in the Gascoyne: Exploring Our Remote Mining Lease
Crystal World’s mining work takes us into some of Australia’s most remote landscapes, where we regularly inspect and explore the mining leases that have been part of our geological work for decades.
One of our most remote leases is in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, where reaching the site can be an adventure in itself. Rough tracks and sharp country make the journey difficult, with punctured tyres a constant risk.
The lease contains a fascinating range of minerals, including iolite and corundum, with even tiny rubies found among the material. The journey through the surrounding landscape can be just as impressive, with wildflowers appearing along the way and parts of the Gascoyne becoming surprisingly green after rain.
Our visits also provide an opportunity to observe the changing landscape firsthand. While some areas are thriving, other parts are extremely dry, with overgrazing by cattle becoming an increasing concern. In some heavily affected areas, the landscape may struggle to recover.
This kind of hands-on exploration is an important part of Crystal World’s connection to Australia’s geology. With more than 35 mining leases and exploration tenements, our ongoing fieldwork continues to uncover specimens from some of the country’s most remote and geologically interesting regions.
